Wal-Mart Stores Inc.’s just-released hiring and promotion data seems to show that the company has made big strides in improving the percentage of women in management compared to statistics revealed several years ago in a class-action sex-discrimination suit against the retailer, but critics claim the numbers may be misleading. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission requires businesses to file the data on the company’s ethnic and gender makeup by job classification –called the EEO-1 report — but businesses aren’t required to make it public.
