‘Housing discrimination’ continues in Israel

Friday, April 4th, 2008

Jerusalem - An Israeli occupation troubleshooting demolished Tapissier Shadi Hamdan’s house in the Arab quarter of Jerusalem for the second time - a portion of what is said Israel is a raid in the area of illegal construction, but what the Palestinians are seen as an attempt, De their numbers in the city in question.

The demolition Wednesday was one of more than 300 days in the Arab neighbourhoods of the city since 2004. Israelis call the authorities in the absence of a building permit. But critics say these permits are almost impossible to obtain and that the demolitions are part of an ancient decades, the policy on limiting the growth of the Palestinian population.

Hamdan’s Fall is particularly difficult - his homeland was destroyed once, but he lives in a remote area, Anata, it is probably for the most part of a future Palestine in the case of an issue of peace.

Already, Anata is cut from the centre of Jerusalem by Israel’s West Bank barrier.

An agreement on the sharing of Jerusalem, the birthplace of 476000 Jews and Arabs 250000 native consistently is one of the main challenges in the negotiations began in the United States in a Middle East Peace Conference ‘ home, last November. The Palestinians want a capital in East Jerusalem, captured by Israel in the war in the Middle East in 1967. Israel says, but the inhabitants of the town was ready to yield to some Arab quarters.

Hamdan, in the apartment of a gathering anti-Israeli demolition activists.

After it was demolished for the first time in 2005, rebuilt in the two volunteers during the last week of summer. Former member of the city of Jerusalem, Meir Margalit, one of the most footer Hamdan, said his group would not be a deterrent, and would again.

On Wednesday, a crane jackhammer riss Hamdan’s down home - two apartments on 145 square metres, one for him and for his parents, 60-year-old Naziha and 70 years, Hassan. The crew was towing guarded by the Israeli police, and an Israeli activist was briefly jailed for trying to prevent the demolition.

“I felt my heart burst,” said Hamdan observer of his house is destroyed. Hamdan, a single person 30 years, said he would sleep in his studio from now on, while his parents, with his brother. A heavyweight came in the basket of goods of the family, including a sofa, a refrigerator and window frames.

Israel says that the destruction is a technical issue - say, it turns on the illegal construction in Jerusalem, and it does so without any distinction between Arab and Jewish residents. “It is a question of the implementation of the Municipal Law,” said the spokesman for the Israeli government Mark Regev.

Palestinians and Israeli activists say that since Israel in East Jerusalem covers the year 1967, it is practically impossible to have building permits in the Arab neighborhoods.

Permits are rationed, because Israel is trying to restrict Palestinian growth and preservation of a Jewish majority in Jerusalem, said Margalit and other anti-demolition activist, Rabbi Arik Ascherman.

“If there were Israelis and Palestinians on an equal chance, unless they have a building permit … This is not a matter of human rights “, Ascherman said.” This is a question of human rights, because the corpses intentional and deliberate discrimination. ”

Gidi Schmerling, the spokesman for the city of Jerusalem, would only accept questions via fax, and a declaration does not respond to all of them. He said that 44 demolition orders were carried out in Jerusalem this year, including 30 in the East and 14 in the western sector, or Jewish.

Margalit said the demolitions, west of Jerusalem relate mostly on balconies, and other additions to the house.

The separation barrier Israel is building along and the West Bank, including a loop around Jerusalem, has complicated the further destruction.

Potholed roads crossing Hamdan neighborhood, which develops in-1967, when Israel, the Arab part of the facility, which means that a portion of the city is within the boundaries and the West Bank.

However, Anata residents, including those living in “Jerusalem” in the neighbourhood who are now separated from the gate of Jerusalem, and can only intervene in the city by the checkpoints. Israel says that the barrier to keep Palestinian attackers. Palestinians understand, it’s a land grab and an attempt to unilaterally draw a border.

The Hamdans’ lawyer Sami Ershied, said on several occasions the family to the permit application, on his land in Anata, but it was several times that, Anata no plan, and without one, permits can be issued .

He said that the demolition orders are directed against several other houses Anata.

For the collection, modelled by tests of discrimination in housing, volunteers, as parents, and visited 26 schools during the last two months. The Way We Live Now: 4-27-03: The Ethicist; Fair Housing

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

While purchases of housing, my friend was offered a place that another couple also Edinaja Rossija. When she went to the signing of a lease, the lessor stated that the sexual orientation of the two other people was a factor in his decision. My friend is not to benefit from intolerance, but it is possible that an apartment has obtained its merits - solvency, references, etc. Is it morally bound, put him? S.A., Great Barrington, Massachusetts

Your friend is admirable sensitivity, but as you say, the landlord of the Commission were invited to discriminate ambiguous or force them to leave the house. Your meeting only shows that perhaps he had a burst. Here in New York, with a little less housing and gesticulating plentiful, many of us would encourage the location from the devil himself, and some people think that we have.

If your friend believes that the renter in a model of persistent discrimination - for example, if a lot of tall buildings it manages and displays a sign in his office sagen”Nr. Irish Need Apply (Practicing Discrimination )”– Since 1847, she would have to refuse housing and local authorities. It would be dishonourable to participate in such housing bias.

In its current situation, it was right to take the apartment. It is not a good come from its rejection of the Constitution. But they should, if possible, a warning message to the rejected tenant to the owner comments. And she once for the protection of a lease contract signed, it can still go further and raise the issue with the owner himself. If it confirms a unilateral policy, they must take account of aspiring tenants. It is she who, as the victim may be legal, and if they win, restitution from the landlord, which would not lead to what your girlfriend was evacuated.

HAPPY ENDING FOLLOW-UP: SA said that the couple in question in the next door SA girlfriend in a recently renovated building, and possession of this very lessor. They, in fact, false type. My answer is in what is now happy, both of which have a hypothetical question chassis demonstrates discrimination and his girlfriend is not pressed trial.

Drug often a fee the same for different dosages of a drug, as 1 - 2 - 5 mg. I sometimes 20 milligram tablets in patients treated with 10 mg per day. You can use Split pills in half. No harm has been done, if both sides are slightly different. (The local VA hospital did this with a lot of pills, including Viagra.), The patient and insurers save money, but other businesses accounts for less than profits. Any thoughts? Lonnie Hanauer, M.D., Mill Burn, N.J.

Some thoughts. My first is a satisfaction that the V.A. Veterinarians help older people enjoy a happy sexual life. This is the least that we can do as a nation, for those who also served brave (or even used) in the Spanish-American war.

My second idea - more power. Its economy is fast on my purchase in bulk, and there’s nothing wrong done. Patients who want the convenience of pills and their precise dosage can choose to pay more for them. This willingness to do the work of pill-splitting receive a discount. Ethics, it is not necessary for us to buy retail. Indeed, pill cutters are sold openly in many other stores, no need insidious.

My third is that the real solution to the expensive drugs does not lie in each of its actions like yours, but brilliant and benign, but in policy changes. So I hope that, in addition to the fine, what you have done, what you and your fellow employees for the receipt of legal reforms, patients could benefit.
