An oil company has been ordered to pay £82,000 to a terminally ill former manager in what is thought to be a record award by a Scottish employment tribunal for disability discrimination. Father-of-three Tom McLauchlan, 52, was dismissed by Aberdeen-based Stolt Comex Seaway after being diagnosed with throat cancer. He won £82,018 in total as a result of the tribunal hearing, which his lawyer said was a landmark legal test case. That sum included £79,708 for disability discrimination and £2,310 for unfair dismissal. Mr McLauchlan was sacked in July 1998 after being told by Stolt Comex Seaway Ltd that there was no longer a place for him in the company where he worked as a loss prevention manager.
