Disability Discrimination Bill
|
|
The bill aims to complete Labour’s manifesto commitment to update the disability discrimination laws in Great Britain. It introduces a new duty on public authorities requiring them, when exercising their functions, to have due regard for eliminating unlawful discrimination against disabled persons, and to promote equality of opportunity between all citizens. The bill will ensure that, with some exceptions, functions of public authorities not already covered by the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995 are brought within its scope. It would become illegal for a public authority, without justification, to discriminate against a disabled person. The bill also amends various transport regulations to ensure complete access to all transport for disabled people. To be considered disabled for the purposes of the DDA, the Bill amends the definition of disability in respect of people with: Mental illness. Source : news.bbc.co.uk |
