Council’s discrimination apology

The unnamed woman was told by her manager she had to ask permission before speaking in Punjabi. The county council admitted unlawful race discrimination and paid out an undisclosed amount of compensation. A council spokesman said the incident was isolated and fell short of the normal standard of good practice. Equal opportunities The woman works in the social services department at the county council and helps organise care for the elderly. Many of the people she helps are Asian and their carers speak Punjabi as their first language. But when she spoke to them in Punjabi she was told she needed permission first. More : news.bbc.co.uk |
